Farm Journal
Good morning from the farm!
As we're busy harvesting and preparing this week's winter shares, we're striving to keep our excitement for spring contained. Its not easy!
Wintston is enjoying early spring sunrises on the porch again, as we take note of the changes all around us. Here are a few videos and pictures capturing symbols of spring noticed at the farm this past week.
The prairie at the southeast edge of the farm entryway was burned on Saturday.
Each spring, the native prairies are managed with controlled burns. These burns are facilitated by the Prairie Crossing Environmental Team and neighborhood volunteers. The team monitors the prairies throughout Prairie Crossing and rotate through burning different prairies each year. This is done to control the amount of matter remaining in the prairies, and also to stimulate growth of new plant life.
Sandhill cranes migrating overhead
Jeff captured a video of the Sandhill cranes migrating in beautiful formations in the sky. Their calls seem to echo throughout the farm frequently now.
Timelapse seeding!
After preparing the soil with compost and nutrients, Jeff carefully steers the walk-behind seeder down defined rows within the hoophouse.
These beautiful magenta seeds will soon become early spring radishes and sweet salad turnips.
All the while, seeds are germinating and growing within the greenhouse before they are planted in hoophouses.
Spring will be here soon, and we're thrilled to be growing for you!
Sweet Tart Strawberry Sauce- This simple recipe for cooking down strawberries (frozen) makes a great sauce to add to anything baked, yogurt or smoothies.
Healthy Chicken Pot Pie - I always use frozen veggies in my chicken pot pie! I tend to add at least 1-2 cups of vegetables to the recipe. This recipe offers dairy-free modifications, too.
