Jeff fell in love with farming nearly 20 years ago while working summers on an organic farm, harvesting heirloom tomatoes and baby greens. While Jeff earned degrees in art and landscape architecture, he never lost his passion for working with plants and farming.
In 2006, Jeff left his career as a landscape architect and we started Dea Dia Organics, a farm business which was a part of the Prairie Crossing Farm Business Development Center. We grew certified organic produce and raised pastured pork and eggs to CSA members, farmers markets and wholesale customers.
In 2010, Jeff joined the Sheaffer family at Sandhill Organics, and in 2012, the Miller family and the Sheaffer family joined forces to transform Sandhill Organics into Sandhill Family Farms. Sandhill Family Farms was a partnership of two farming families, farming in two farm locations (Brodhead, WI and Grayslake, IL) providing for a shared CSA program. Our two farms now operate more independently. The Sheaffers continue to operate Sandhill Family Farms in Brodhead and we operate Prairie Wind Family Farm in Grayslake.
We love where we farm! We enjoy the day-to-day connections we have with our neighbors and community. We value our collaboration with the Liberty Prairie Foundation on projects such as mentoring beginning farmers at Farm Business Development Center and offering the Gleaning Program which provides thousands of pounds of organic produce each year for our community food banks. We also enjoy our partnership with the Prairie Crossing Charter School on their award-winning Farm to Table lunch program. Collectively, we offer a variety of farm events throughout the growing season. Our farm continues to be a lively, community gathering spot!
Our passion for cooking, eating and sharing food fuels everything we do. We respect the plants and animals that create our food and we treat the land with deference so it will keep producing for generations to come.
We’re honored to grow food for our Chicagoland community. We thank you for your support!
