Farm Journal
Happy Halloween from your farm!
In an exciting finish to the season, the repairing, rebuilding and re-covering of all damaged structures is complete!

As we mentioned in September, the spring storm damage included:
  • 5 structures = 3 Hoophouses destroyed + 1 Greenhouse & 1 Hoophouse significantly damaged.
  • This past week, Jeff and team repaired, rebuilt and recovered Liberty Prairie's damaged Greenhouse.
  • Oh, and we created, built and removed 2 temporary growing structures, but at this point, who is counting?!
Words cannot completely express our gratitude for the support we received this spring and throughout this season. We faced an extremely difficult start to the 2023 farm season, and we finally feel like we have our feet under us again, thanks to this community.
Last Friday, we sent an email entitled, "A 2024 Farm Update" and we are including this story again below. Later this week, the 2024 CSA Farm Share registration will begin. Please watch for this email announcement for more information.
Dear Prairie Wind Family Farm Members and Supporters,

Starting later this year, we are thrilled to share with you that Prairie Wind Family Farm and Liberty Prairie are joining forces under the name Liberty Prairie. We are doing this to grow our shared impact further than we could as individual organizations. We truly enjoy collaborating with others, so we look forward to more closely working with Karen Wilkes, Executive Director, and the Liberty Prairie team.

Jeff is building an agricultural pathway program within the Grayslake High School district. As his work continues to expand and the farm exists as his primary classroom, Jeff and his students will also continue to provide holistic land management for the farm.

We are growing and transitioning our farmstand into a farm store, moving its location to the Prairie Crossing Station Square. This location allows greater access as people can get there by car, bike, foot, or train. We will continue to offer our produce and the products of our farming friends and partners year-round. We will continue to accept government food vouchers, cash, and credit cards. We feel increasing food access is needed to make the kind of impact Lake County deserves. We welcome you to join us for our Grand Opening is on Saturday, November 11th from 9am-4pm.

Our family will continue to serve as the resident farmers of the CSA, Farm Store and work with our returning farm crew.

We will together continue to offer our popular CSA program, with some modifications, and farm events. Here's what this means for CSA Members:
  • We will continue to offer Farm CSA Shares (Vegetable, Fruit, and Egg Shares) growing certified organic vegetables and working with our long-time friends and partners, Mick Klug Farms for fresh local fruit and Joe's Farm for pasture-raised eggs.
  • However, we will now deliver only on an every-other-week schedule to off-farm sites. We will share additional details and a calendar of the delivery dates next week.
  • We will continue to offer early registration discounts.
  • We would be honored to be your farmers again in 2024.
While much changes, our family's commitment to our community, growing food and the land remains steadfast. Thank you for your steadfast support of us and in our work.

With sincere gratitude,
Jeff and Jen Miller
